The Bogala Graphite Mine in Bogala, Sri Lanka, has recently made history by opening an extraordinary underground restaurant. This remarkable dining establishment is situated an impressive 410 feet below ground, making it the first of its kind in the country.
The mine itself has a rich history, dating back to its establishment in 1865. Over the years, it has gained a stellar reputation for exporting high-quality graphite to countries such as Germany, Japan, India, and Pakistan. This has significantly contributed to the country’s foreign exchange earnings.
At present, the Bogala graphite mine reaches a depth of 476 meters (approximately 1585 feet). It is at a depth of 124 meters (410 feet) that visitors will encounter a remarkable sight – an underground restaurant known as Dona. This unique dining establishment has been ingeniously installed around 150 meters from the mine’s river.
The underground restaurant can accommodate up to 15 guests at a time, providing them with an unforgettable dining experience surrounded by the mystique of the graphite mine. Visitors can indulge in delectable food and drinks prepared on-site while immersing themselves in the extraordinary ambiance.
What sets this restaurant apart is not only its location but also the opportunity it offers to witness the mining activities taking place nearby. Guests can observe the dedicated workers extracting graphite while enjoying their meals. To enhance the experience, several dummies have been strategically placed to provide a glimpse into the mining process.
The administration of Bogala Graphite Mine has gone above and beyond by granting permission for visits to the graphite mine, specifically targeting children over 14 years of age. Additionally, they have extended this opportunity to students appearing for the GCE A/L exam, recognizing the educational value and unique experience it provides. Authorized individuals are also welcome to explore the mine and dine at the underground restaurant.
This new venture not only showcases the innovation and vision of Bogala Graphite Mine but also provides a one-of-a-kind experience for visitors. The combination of exquisite cuisine, breathtaking surroundings, and an insight into the mining operations makes this underground restaurant a truly remarkable destination in Sri Lanka.
